Two Days On The North Coast

Two days on the North Coast - Michele Strong, Pete Dew, Dave Bowden, Davy Killen and Kevin Harrell, Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th October 2006.

"Would you like to try a bit of surfing?

"Sure" I thought.. "How hard can it be?"

Last October Pete Dew told us he was organizing a couple of days self-catering and varied paddling on the north coast. so Kevin and I said we'd love to come along.

On the Tuesday morning we all met in Portrush then headed for Whiterocks.

The four of us were surfing novices, and Pete had told us that we'd certainly be out of our boats before too long, and I thought "oh yeah." however after several minutes in the surf I was indeed out of my boat, without realizing quite how it had happened!

Over the next few hours I spent far more time out of the boat than in it!... It certainly was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but on the rare moments when it all seemed to work it was a lot of fun!

Hypothermia aside, I really enjoyed it, and would certainly go out again!

The other guys did much better than me as the photos show.

After a reviving night with alcohol and a Chinese takeaway we set off the next morning for Ballintoy Harbour, and some sea kayaking!

This was more familiar territory for me and Kevin, and after the cold windy conditions of the previous day the weather was perfect!... Warm and sunny with very little wind.

After playing around the rocks at Ballintoy we headed off around the stunning coastline to the Causeway.

With the tide helping us we seemed to get there in no time at all.

We decided against landing there for lunch as there was a reasonable sized swell so we went on to the slip near Runskerry House just before Bushfoot Strand instead.

We finally finished an excellent and varied couple of days at Portballintrae Harbour.
